Facet and Tile Controls
Adjust how facet and tile values are returned, replaced, grouped, and ordered in Lightweight mode
Facet and Tile Controls is available in Lightweight mode only. In the full platform, facets are managed in Search Facet Management and Browse Facet Management.
What it solves
Facets are only as good as the values behind them. Real catalogs produce messy ones: a size facet with a handful of values nobody recognizes, a color facet where "Crimson" and "Cherry" should read as one option, a numeric attribute that needs sensible buckets instead of a long list of individual figures, or a facet that is genuinely useful on one query and pure noise on another.
Facet and Tile Controls handles exactly these cases. Each control is a targeted adjustment to what shoppers see — hide a value, rename it, bucket it, reorder it, merge it, or force it into view — applied without re-indexing the catalog or changing product data.
When to use it
- Suppressing bad values — a facet or tile value is wrong or confusing and should not be shown, permanently or for a set period
- Cleaning up inconsistent values — replace supplier values with the wording shoppers expect
- Bucketing numbers — turn a numeric attribute into meaningful intervals rather than a long list of values
- Removing a facet where it does not help — drop a facet for specific queries or browse contexts
- Guaranteeing a facet appears — force an important facet into view, at a chosen position
- Reordering dynamic facets — promote facets whose values matter most for a surface
- Consolidating overlapping facets — merge one facet into another attribute so shoppers see a single filter
Key concepts
Each entry on the page is a facet control: an attribute, a control type, and the configuration that control needs. The available control types are:
| Control type | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ignore facet and tile values | Excludes specified values, for a defined time period |
| Replace facet and tile values | Substitutes specified values with replacement values |
| Set numerical intervals | Defines numeric interval buckets for a facet |
| Remove facets and tiles | Removes selected facets according to query or browse criteria |
| Force return facets | Ensures selected facets appear, at specified positions |
| Rerank dynamic facets | Controls the ranking of dynamic facets based on their values |
| Merge facets | Merges one facet into another attribute |
How it works
Open Facet and Tile Controls from the navigation menu. The page lists every existing control.
To find a control in a long list:
- Sort by attribute name, control type, or control configuration
- Filter by attribute name, control type, or configuration values
To change what shoppers see, create a new control, modify an existing one, or delete one you no longer need. Each action is subject to your role permissions, so a viewer can browse the list while an editor can change it — see User Management.
Quick example
A sporting goods retailer finds that the color facet on their catalog shows four supplier values — "Crimson", "Cherry", "Wine", and "Burgundy" — where shoppers only think in terms of "Red". The size facet also lists every individual inseam measurement rather than useful ranges.
The merchandiser creates two controls:
- A Replace facet and tile values control on the color attribute, substituting the four supplier values with "Red".
- A Set numerical intervals control on the inseam attribute, defining the buckets shoppers actually shop by.
The color facet now shows one recognizable option instead of four near-identical ones, and inseam filters by range. Neither change required a catalog update or a re-index.
